Special issue of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics on the ethics of (ethical) expertise and ethics committee work
Guest editors: Silke Schicktanz (University of Goettingen, Culture and Ethics of Biomedicine), Michael Dusche (Fellow,
Jawaharlal Nehru Institute for Advance Study, JNU).
Along with the global spread of medical and scientific developments such as, for instance, stem cell research, assisted
reproductive technologies, and pharmaceutical research in many countries, comes another trend, i.e. the institutionalisation
of expert advice. The spectrum ranges from local research ethics committees, ethics boards in clinics and hospitals and
national ethics councils to international ethics boards at WHO or UNESCO. While ethics committees are often welcomed as
a practical means to supervise science and medical practice, serious questions are also raised about their function in society
and about the moral and legal legitimacy of this expert advice.
The Indian Journal of Medical Ethics invites scholars from all the disciplines involved (medical and life sciences, social sciences,
political philosophy, medical law and bioethics) to contribute to reflections on the institutionalisation of expert advice in
ethically relevant decisions by addressing one or more of the following questions:
- What is the moral-philosophical or politico-legal basis for work in ethics committees, especially in developing countries?
- What kind of critical experience exists within the framework of expert committees / expert advice in science and health
care decision making?
- What is or ought to be the future of ethics committee work?
- What are the ethical implications of being an expert in politically relevant decisions?
- How do cultural and historical backgrounds interfere with the worldwide trend in establishing ethics committees?
Scholars are invited to send a short, clearly written manuscript (maximum of 1,600 words, including the abstract, following
the manuscript guidelines of the IJME) by September 1, 2010 to silke.schicktanz@medizin.uni-goettingen.de
All manuscripts are subject to an anonymous peer-review process.
